Studying Civil Rights?

On being released last year, Kathryn Stockett’s The Help became an instanst best-seller.  However, you may not have considered it for your students.  Set in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, The Help is the perfect accompaniment to study of American Civil Rights.

Told in three distinct voices, The Help follows three women as they tell the previously untold stories of the black women who raise white children but are not allowed to use the same bathrooms as their employees.  This is a powerful exploration of the Civil Rights era.

The Help is now a major motion picture that could easily sit alongside movies such as Mississippi Burning whithin the curriculum.
