Meet Alison Lester and Marc Martin

Penguin Teachers’ Academy is delighted to present the chance to attend a workshop, demonstrating a plethora of ways to use the delightful books of these two very talented author/illustrators. Not only will we be showing you ways in which you can best apply these books in your classrooms and providing free resources and books, you will have a rare opportunity to hear from and meet the authors themselves.

Alison Lester has become a household name in Australia and her beautiful picture books have become classics in every school library. Her trademark illustrations and unique storytelling abilities have seen her books become beloved favourites. Her picture books mix imaginary worlds with everyday life, encouraging children to believe in themselves and celebrate the differences that make them special.

Alison spends part of every year travelling to schools in remote areas, using her books to help children and adults write and draw about their own lives. Alison began illustrating children’s books in her late twenties. After training as a secondary art teacher she found that although she loved teaching art, she didn’t like the everyday routine of school.

Now with an impressive list of books and awards to her name, Alison has spent the past year busy with commitments as the Australian Children’s Laureate and as an Ambassador for the National Year of Reading.

Marc Martin is an illustrator and children’s book author. His illustrations have been commissioned by clients such as Monocle magazine, Wired magazine, The Financial Review, Capital magazine, The Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and various festivals.

Marc’s distinctive style and extraordinary use of various mediums and colour, combined with his themes of sustainability and the environment, make this new author/illustrator an exciting newcomer to watch. A Forest and the soon to be released The Curious Explorers Illustrated Guide to Exotic Animals A-Z will be sure to capture the hearts and imaginations of readers for many years to come.

This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for teachers, librarians, educational support staff and educators. There are limited places available, so get your RSVP in fast!
